If Psora is the miasm of deficiency — of the body that can't quite do enough — then Sycosis is its opposite: the miasm of excess. Where Psora leaves things incomplete, Sycosis produces too much. Too much growth, too much secretion, too much emotion, too much holding on.
Hahnemann traced the Sycotic miasm to the suppression of gonorrhea, but in modern homeopathy we understand it more broadly as a deep constitutional tendency toward overgrowth, accumulation, and concealment. It is one of the most common miasms in our modern world, and understanding it can shed light on a wide range of chronic conditions.
The defining theme of Sycosis is excess and concealment. The body produces too much — too many cells, too much mucus, too many secretions — and at the same time, the person tends to hide, to cover up, to keep secrets. There is a deep sense of shame at the core of the Sycotic constitution, a feeling that something is wrong that must not be seen.
Physical hallmarks of the Sycotic miasm include:
Emotionally, the Sycotic person tends toward:
Children with a Sycotic tendency often present with:
| Remedy | Key Indications |
|---|
| Thuja | The great Sycotic remedy; warts, fixed ideas, secretiveness, vaccination effects |
|---|---|
| Medorrhinum | The nosode of Sycosis; intense, hurried, loves the ocean; deep chronic conditions |
| Natrum Sulphuricum | Liver and lung affinity; worse in damp weather; head injuries |
| Nitric Acid | Warts that bleed; splinter-like pains; resentment and unforgiveness |
| Causticum | Warts; urinary weakness; deep sympathy for suffering; progressive conditions |
| Staphysagria | Suppressed emotions; warts after indignation; urinary complaints |
It is worth noting that Sycosis is considered by many homeopaths to be one of the most prevalent miasms in the 21st century. The explosion of autoimmune conditions, hormonal disorders, cysts, fibroids, and chronic sinusitis in our population reflects the Sycotic pattern. Vaccination, antibiotic overuse, and the suppression of acute discharges with conventional medicine are thought to drive the Sycotic miasm deeper.
This is not meant to alarm — it is meant to illuminate. When we understand the pattern, we can address it at its root.
Next week in our Miasm Series: the Syphilitic miasm — the miasm of destruction.
> If the Sycotic picture resonates with patterns you see in yourself or your family, constitutional homeopathy can help address the underlying tendency. Book a Consultation with Dr. Jami →
